Have you checked your screen resolution?  Depending on your card, the 
drivers change, I believe, between 6.8.2 and 7.  Try setting a default 
with a lower resolution and color depth to see if that has any effect.  
You could also look through the log file.  There might be a clue there: 
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
