If you have experience with making your own package try to play with the
parameter in the nvidia.install and make your own package. I have had
problems which sounds as yours as i run the installer with the parameters
from this file. If you want to see all possible paramters of the installer
and their explanations do a "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run -A".

The installer works here fine if i use this:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1.run --no-network --no-opengl-headers \
    --x-prefix=/usr --x-module-path=/usr/lib/xorg/modules

Be aware that this is not an analysis because i don't know what the nvidia
installer do and the using of the installer instead of the package has in my
case historical reasons from the time as i use another distro. So see this
more as an additional information and good luck for getting your gui back.

See you, Attila
