I got around this by removing all /etc/fstab entries and using pmount.  For 
some reason when my ipod is mounted by fstab, my transfer speeds are horrid.  
Also, the most recent udev upgrade broke some things for me - Iposted to this 
mailing list with specifics if you're interested.  To get around these 
issues, I wrote a perl script that mounts, unmounts, and ejects my ipod (it 
also creates vcards, but that's probably not something you're after).  It can

As mentioned in that post, I'm not a coder, so caveat emptor, et al.  Also, I 
use a different (possibly wrong) udev rule, but it works for me.  Now I use 
gnupod and my script, and don't even need x running to manage the music on my 
ipod.  Hope this helps some.
