Are you running XMMS when this happens?

Back when I was still using XMMS, my memory (RAM and swap) sometimes
completely filled up. Then it started trashing for about 5 minutes and
finally, when XMMS (together with a few other apps) was killed,
everything went back to normal.

It never happened when XMMS wasn't running tho.
