I was attempting to help someone with a fresh xfce4 install here:

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?t=20141

and JGC dropped in with an interesting point, namely, xfce4 does not
depend on X. Not wishing to burden the OP with my problems, I went off
to my completely X-less server, did pacman -S for kde, gnome, and xfce4
in turn, captured the packages to be installed, and cancelled.
Obviously, there's all kinds of non-X stuff there as well, but this is
what I'm curious about - xorg dependencies for the "Big Three" DEs, as
follows:

KDE:
xorg-fonts-alias-1.0.1-1
xorg-fonts-encodings-1.0.0-1
xorg-fonts-misc-1.0.0-2
xorg-server-1.0.2-1
xorg-server-utils-1.0.0-1
xorg-utils-1.0.0-1
xorg-xkb-utils-1.0.1-1

GNOME:
NONE (!)

XFCE4:
xorg-fonts-alias-1.0.1-1
xorg-fonts-encodings-1.0.0-1
xorg-fonts-misc-1.0.0-2
xorg-server-1.0.2-1
xorg-server-utils-1.0.0-1
xorg-utils-1.0.0-1
xorg-xkb-utils-1.0.1-1

Two questions occur to me:
- Why would pacman install xorg-server, without the means to start it
i.e. xorg-xinit?
- Why would I get NO xorg packages if I chose to install gnome?

Like I said, I'm just curious.

Tom K.
