#1: People know pacman for having a "tarball" kind of package. What
would renaming it bring, other than having to rewrite everything?

#2: One thing: last time I checked, if a gzip file doesn't end in gz,
then gunzip cannot extract it. So, in case your pacman is broken, that
way at least you can still extract pacman and fix your box. I know
renaming the file is possible, but can you give any reasons why
renaming the packages to .pac would actually be worth it?

#3: There's this thing called "geek ego" where you always feel better
(usually because you are better) when you use tgz as a file format :P

#4: AFAIK, .pac is already a standard for proxy auto configuration
scripts. Try finding an extension that's not already taken :P
