For #1, if you just kill some of your #2, i am sure it can be solve it. And for those who dont want to kick #2, "its not my problem" :)

Some of my machines still run 2.4 for one of these two simple reasons:
#1: Some just cannot run 2.6, and freeze if so (even with a generic
installer cd version). #2: Too lazy to upgrade them.
