I just got dialup working on my ubuntu box at home two days ago. I'm not sure what your problem is, but you can get some more clues by appending the line debug to your /etc/ppp/peers/provider file (or whatever peers file you are starting pppd with). You can also see all of pppd's parameters with the line dump If you are starting pppd from the command line you can just pass these as arguments, too. Grep /var/log/* for pppd and see if anything interesting turns up. Also, do your /etc/ppp/chap-secrets and /etc/ppp/pap-secrets files have your user name and password in them?
