There's your problem right there - you're using version 8.23 of the kernel
module, and 8.24 of the xorg utils. The drivers detect the version
conflict, and won't allow direct rendering. You can verify this by looking
in /var/log/Xorg.0.log or (possibly) running

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo

but I'm 99% positive that's your problem.

With the release of the -beyond kernel, I don't think iphitus is updating
the -archck stuff anymore; you might need to build your own 8.24 kernel
module for -archck; I did. It's really simple, if you know how to make
packages - check the wiki here:

http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ATI_Radeon_%26_Kernel_2.6

for custom kernel compilation method, using the existing PKGBUILDs.

Please note, the wiki references the archck packages and ATI drivers 8.23 -
this is outdated as I haven't had the time to update it yet, but for the
mostpart it's accurate.
