So I figured out what the problem was... In the /etc/mplayerplug-in.conf file, there is the line "use-mimetypes=1". However, the /etc/mplayerplug-in.types file was not installed, so no mime types were registered. I fixed this by deleting the offending line in the configuration file. (I also deleted "keep-download=1"; this seems like an odd default value?)
