I've got the same with an gzip'ed cpio archive (backup from my test partiton)
and the size was only 2.3 GB. I have used in this case the gzip from arch.

The only what i can say is that i boot with System Rescue CD (cpio 2.5 instead
of 2.6 in arch and gzip 1.3.3-r4 instead of 1.2.4b in arch) and than i can
extract it. And yes i can boot from this partiton after i have restored the
gzip cpio file. I recognized some little errors during the boot process but
this only my test partition so it is not bad for me.

Perhaps this info helps anyone who has a better understanding about it as
mine.
