seriously: use amarok-engine-xine (in 1.4.0 you have to anyway) and in 
the configs you are able to set the way xine should work. this is the 
way it works on my old machine (on the laptop, there is no 
non-turning surround sound). i also know that vlc can be made to use 
surround too, but i never tried this myself (my old machine has 512kb 
of video ram and playing dvd is no option). a good read is for sure 
[1].
