TeXLive is really just a superset of teTeX, organized in an intelligent
modular fashion. Yet it is currently distributed as a huge ISO file,
though source tarballs for binaries and texmf packages are also there.
There are currently discussions on the tetex and tex-live mailing lists
about tailoring out a customized tex-live version about the size of
tetex that would be suitable to most linux distros. My guess is that
this will materialize rather soon, but it is not yet clear what the
release frequency will be. Currently TeXLive is released once a year
around December.

One big advantage I see with TeXlive is that since it provides a
database (in XML format) describing individual CTAN packages and
thematic collections of packages, it would be quite straightforward to
write a script that generates a PKGBUILD for any tex-live package. This
way Arch users would have easy access to virtually the whole of CTAN via
TeXLive.

I have compiled TeXlive binaries from source on my machine, so if the
tetex maintainer is interested, I'd be willing to help. At this stage it
might be preferable to wait though.
