I completely agree with this.

I'm aware of the solutions posted -- the pacman -Rd xyz, pacman -Up 
abc.pkg.tar.gz is what I use -- but I don't consider them solutions at 
all. Workarounds maybe.

Besides, the "remove packages depending on xyz before installing one 
that provides xyz" method is not even a workaround. For example, kdebase 
depends on libraw1394. I really don't consider removing kdebase sane...
