It looks like Varun was able to get his system to work without adding his user to disk. But to be clear: hal should be in both the storage group and the hal group.(?) (just not the normal user due to security risks). At the risk of getting a RTFM (actually, I searched and didn't find anything), can somebody expand on what the storage and disk groups are? What's the difference and purpose of each, and what are the security implications of each?
