So it's not a "real" master. Are you sure there are no other channels
affecting that output? For example, I have PCM (which looks like the
one you call master) and master, that is able to mute everything.

Another possibility could be learning how to use amixer or another CLI
mixer. You create a voldown.sh that you'll bind to your button instead
of going to control the mixer through gnome. This file contains two
amixer lines that lower the volume for both the channels. Same for
volup.sh and volmute.sh.

But seriously, if it doesn't work well, maybe there's a bug in your
card's driver...
