Yes they do:
ls /etc/cups/ppd/
Business-Inkjet-1000.ppd  PDFPrinter.ppd

cat /etc/printcap
Business-Inkjet-1000|Business-Inkjet-1000:rm=localhost.localdomain:rp=Business-Inkjet-1000:

Another thought: Is it possible to remove hplip alltogether and only keep the ppd file for my printer? Or are the hplip binary and libraries absolute necessity?
