It is not easy to say for me because i like it that AMD makes a good job because to have a choice brings better prices in the market but the core 2 duo has a better performance and less heat in the most tests what i read. My Server, which runs since some weeks with the E6400 core 2 duo under opensuse 10.1 is silent enough and it has only the origin cpu cooler from intel on it. The pc case is the Artic Silentium T-2 which you can see here: http://www.arctic-cooling.com/pc_case2.php?idx=12 It is realy silent but for the desktop which has in the most cases a higher cpu load (and perhaps an E6600 or E6700 -) ) i suggest a cpu cooler as at example the CNPS7700-AlCu from zalman (www.zalmanusa.com) which has a very good test on the toms hardware page. Sorry, but the test is in german: http://hardware.thgweb.de/2004/12/07/zalman_cnps7700_der_neue_dicke/ I wish you good luck and see the above hints only as sugesstions to find the right combination for yourself.
