The fgl_glxgears is from ATI (comes with their downloadable rpm and .run files).  I've read various statements on http://www.rage3d.com/board/forumdisplay.php?f=61 over the months regarding how much better it is than glxgears.  Anyway, starting with 8.27.10 my glxgears and fgl_glxgears "results" dropped substantially and according to ATI this is due to the driver now supporting "mouse polling", and that the results from glxgears and fgl_glxgears are not good for determining the cards performance.  However, I liked to use them for a baseline from driver to driver release.  You can also try using "fgl_glxgears -fbo" as I think that is recommended in the ATI release notes on their site.  I've bee using SPECViewPerf ( www.spec.org) lately to get some baseline numbers.
