Speaking unofficially(!) I would say the correct procedure would be to
fix the packages,
Sounds logical to me. I think that I just felt that I must be missing
something.
Maybe the best procedure, if you want to use Archie as a base, would be
to help with Archie development.
If I was even close to thinking that I was anywhere near qualified to
do that, I would certainly do it.

Hmmm. I'm not familiar with larch. I tried googleing on it and got a lot
of
matches but I'm not sure that I saw anything applicable to this discussion.
