What I did, (i'm posting from a ppp connection now) is this.
I actually use the rc.d/ppp script to connect when I want. I used a
combination of wvdial (to learn a good set of modem init strings), and
pppconfig to configure the 'provider' ppp thing. Then in my /etc/ppp/options
I added the option for 'updetach'. This means that once you get an IP and
netmask, it detaches from the console, but not before.
I went this route, as I didn't always use KDE, and the GTK stuff didn't seem
to work right for me, (I ran sawfish). I've not tried to get kppp running,
as I'm content with my init script. You may want to give it a try.
Regarding the problem, it seems that the authentication is the problem. Since
it connects to the remote gateway. You may want to play with the different
auth methods (PAP and CHAP are the most popular. Mine uses PAP.)
