gnome-terminal depends on vte and some libraries in the gnome platform. The reason for having "platform" and "desktop" is to make sure that "platform" remains API and ABI stable. When I develop some application for 2.16, it has to work with the 2.18 platform also, without recompilation. That's the requirement to be a "platform" module inside GNOME. I'm happy with that, it allows me to test their new platform libs with the previous desktop to make sure the platform is stable.
