gnome-terminal depends on vte and some libraries in the gnome platform.
The reason for having "platform" and "desktop" is to make sure that
"platform" remains API and ABI stable. When I develop some application
for 2.16, it has to work with the 2.18 platform also, without
recompilation. That's the requirement to be a "platform" module inside
GNOME.
I'm happy with that, it allows me to test their new platform libs with
the previous desktop to make sure the platform is stable. If that's the
case, I can start wrecking my desktop, which is not API-stable at all
across releases :P
