I agree, if we removed ifconfig I think i'd eventually go crazy from my muscle memory always typing 'ifconfig eth0' to see my ip and getting command not found.

One tool is depreciated and is old and crusty, the other is shiny and
new? I "prefer" iproute2 myself, mostly because it's a bit more
powerful.  But removing net-tools entirely might be a bit extreme.
