Hi Peter,
Have you added this to your settings.py file:

GDAL_LIBRARY_PATH = "C:/OSGeo4W/bin/gdalxxx.dll" #<- make sure this path is
correct and points to the actual dll, note the forward slashess

Page 6 of the docs has a little more information about this.
