Hi Lucy, this is a good question, because the way open layers 3 uses the MAP_EXTENT coordinates that Arches provides is a little non-intuitive. The coordinates that you have entered create a box, so picture that box on the map. What open layers does with that box is make sure that every time the map view is changed (zoom in/zoom out/pan), the *center *of the new view is inside that extent. However, as you point out with Libya, it doesn't actually "clip" or alter what is being show in the map. With the eastern sites, it sounds like you do need to extend your coordinates a bit to the East... Hopefully that will do it.
