Evening all,

I have started installing the dependencies as per the script on the git
hub, one step at a time.
The first few went OK. When running the line:
 $sudo apt-get install python-pip -y
I got a couple of messages:
The directory '/home/arches/.cache/pip/http' or its parent directory is not
owned by the current user and the cache has been disabled. Please check the
permissions and owner of that directory. If executing pip with sudo, you
may want sudo's -H flag.
and
The directory '/home/arches/.cache/pip' or its parent directory is not
owned by the current user and caching wheels has been disabled. check the
permissions and owner of that directory. If executing pip with sudo, you
may want sudo's -H flag.

I rewound a bit (I am using a virtual machine and taking regular snapshots)
and,as advised, replaced the line with
 $sudo -H apt-get install python-pip -y
and this time did not get any warnings.

The next step runs the line:
  $pip install virtualenv==13.1.2
which works OK but ends with a message:
You are using pip version 8.1.1, however version 18.1 is available.
You should consider upgrading via the 'pip install --upgrade pip' command.

I understand that Arches is written in a legacy version of python (2.7) and
would like to check that it is OK to use the latest version of pip or
should we stick with the old one that gets installed? I don't really
understand how it ties together, and whether versions of pip are tied to
versions of python.

Thanks in advance,
Pat
