Hi Joel, to follow up on this, I have just made a related post in the 
Arches developer forum: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/arches-dev.

I've discovered that indeed some sort of update to v3 users' 
implementations will need happen to fully support the v3-v4 migration (I 
had been trying to avoid that), so I'm just trying to figure out what the 
best way to handle that update will be. My proposal is a solution that 
would just involve putting some new files in your app, and wouldn't require 
updates to your virtual env at all. And it should work fine for any v3 
release. This would also get around the upgrade issues you encountered 
above.

So, I'll keep you posted. It's actually likely that the v4 code-base won't 
need to change at all, just the preparatory steps and documentation.
