Hi Jude, Glad to hear you’re moving on to Arches v.5. Right.
To answer your first question. Yes they make sense. When we built the first heritage inventory package (HIP) for Arches we based each model on one of the MIDAS themes. We’ve slimmed down the number of models since as you can type many of the activity models (investigative activity, management activity etc) but the resource models are MIDAS compliant. We have separated Assets into Heritage Assets (building and structures), Heritage Areas (large sites, conservation areas etc.) and Artefacts (self-explanatory). We’ve also developed a full period model similar to yours. In the olden days we made do with a dropdown and from and to dates, but in this fancy, future-proofing world we live in, a semantically-rich, spatio-temporal representation of time seems more useful and appropriate. I’m happy to share. Okay so linking is relatively easy. Each node that needs to reference another model (eg. a Monument record referencing a period record) needs to have the data type ‘resource instance’ or ‘resource instance list’. If you are only referencing 1 model then choose resource instance and then select the model you want to link to. The top branch in the model will be the one you see so for Period make sure the Name is at the top in the Cards display. You can also link to 2 models so for example if you wanted to link people and organizations to a monument using a single ‘Associated Actors’ branch you can do this by selecting ‘resource instance list’ as the datatype and then add each model. Finally there isn’t a guide to mapping MIDAS to the CRM. However, I do have a spreadsheet I made many, many moons ago which is VERY out of date (as the CRM has been revised) and includes classes and properties which have since been deprecated but I can share those with you. I'm Collections Information Manager for Manx National Heritage and we have just completed the install of Arches v.5 for the Isle of Man Historic Environment Record. The install was done by Knowledge Integration who moved a copy of our data into 1 Resource Model. I've looked at the Arches Guide, watched the Webinars and started to create the MIDAS-based Resource Models we have chosen to use - see attached screenshot. Early days. I wonder however if anyone can give me some basic pointers (and reassurance) on the following questions I have, which I'm thinking are fairly basic queries for a beginner with Arches such as myself: Do these MIDAS-based Resource Models make sense within Arches? Is anyone else using MIDAS in this way? How do I use and create Branches to link between the Resource Models? Knowledge Integration took our HER data and put it in the Monument Resource Model and created a Graph - see attached screenshot. Site Dating node (for example) needs to 'change' to my newly created Date and Period Resource Model; see attached screenshot. How do I do this (if indeed I'm interpreting this right)? Is there a guide on how to apply CIDOC-CRM to MIDAS? (Not even sure if that is a valid question).
