It's not in the archiva side, but in the maven 1 side. The artifact plugin doesn't support this protocol : http://maven.apache.org/maven-1.x/plugins/artifact/protocols.html
In fact I succeeded to make it work but there's some side effects because we have to downgrade the version of http-client bundled in the core. I abandoned to implement it.
