I've asked about the format of the nexus index but haven't received a response. Archiva stores in what is likely a similar format, but it is not used by m2eclipse.
Other integrations such as MevenIDE (Netbeans) and q4e are making pluggable implementations for repository manager indexes so that they can support any implementation.
