                ********** DFC-L WELCOME MESSAGE **********

WELCOME TO DFC-L

Welcome to DFC-L, the electronic discussion list of the Desert Fishes
Council (DFC). The goal of this discussion list is to facilitate
communications among members of the Desert Fishes Council and thus to
facilitate work toward the mission of the group. All Desert Fishes Council
members who provide their e-mail address on a membership form sent to the
Membership Secretary are subscribed. Anyone else interested in the mission
of the DFC (below) is welcome to subscribe themselves as well.

Important things you should know about DFC-L before you start using it include:

1. DFC-L is to be used for communications which further the mission of the
Council, which is generally "to provide for exchange and transmittal of
information on status, protection, and management of desert fishes and
their associated ecosystems." More detail regarding the purpose of the
Desert Fishes Council, and therefore of DFC-L, may be found in the
Council's constitution
(http://www.desertfishes.org/general/dfc_more.html).

2. Subscription to DFC-L is open to anyone, though we hope all subscribers
to the list also support the DFC by becoming members. See the DFC Web pages
(http://www.desertfishes.org) for membership
information and application forms. You may easily un-subscribe at any time
(see server commands below).

3. To post a message on DFC-L, and have it immediately distributed to all
subscribers, send the message to [email protected] just like you
would send normal e-mail. Your message will be immediately forwarded to all
subscribers.

4. DFC-L is managed by computer software running on the University of Texas
list server (see http://www.utexas.edu/its/mailinglists/) and you as a
subscriber, NOT by a person. By sending simple e-mailed commands to the
address
[email protected], subscribers can change characteristics of
their subscription (cancel it, suspend it, change e-mail address, etc.) as
well as obtain list-related information (by indexing or searching the list
archives), retrieve e-mail addresses of other subscribers, etc. DO NOT
send server commands to [email protected]. The password given to
subscribers when first subscribed will be necessary for some server
commands, so file it away. You can easily change it. A few common server
commands are provided below, but excellent, complete documentation on
LISTPROC commands is available on WWW via
http://www.utexas.edu/its/mailinglists/answers/index.html. Please consult this
documentation and that provided below, prior to contacting the list owners
(Dean Hendrickson - [email protected] or Jerry Stefferud -
[email protected]) for answers to your questions.

5. DFC-L is an un-moderated list, meaning that whatever you send to
[email protected] will be immediately distributed by the server to
all DFC-L subscribers without prior review by a moderator. Please be
considerate and polite in your postings, and be aware that e-mailed
communications do not carry with them very important aspects of spoken
communications, such as facial expressions, gestures and tones of voice. It
is therefore very easy for someone to misinterpret what you intended to
say. Again, please restrict your postings to those relevant to the mission
of the DFC (above).

6. All messages (including this one) are archived on the server, and
archives are searchable and retrievable by anyone subscribed to the list.
See server commands below for information on how to retrieve information
from the archive.

7. You may set your subscription to "digest", and thus will receive only
one e-mail message from DFC-L each week (sent Sundays at 00:01 AM), but
that message will contain all postings to DFC-L since the previous digest.
See server commands below for information on how to set your subscription
to digest.

8. You will be able to post messages to DFC-L, or to send commands to the
server, ONLY if you send them from the e-mail account by which you are
subscribed. Server commands are provided below that will allow you to
change your e-mail address (but that command must be sent from the address
by which you are subscribed). You may subscribe multiple e-mail accounts.

9. By default, your e-mail address and name will be given by the server to
any DFC-L member issuing the server command "REVIEW DFC-L". Use the server
command provided below to conceal your address. Only list subscribers will
be able to use the REVIEW command (i.e. nobody else will be able to get
your e-mail address except from any posting you might make, which would be
world accessible in the archives).

10. SERVER COMMANDS - unlike postings to the list, these should be e-mailed
to:
          [email protected]
The server will reply to you by e-mail. Server commands are simply e-mail
messages containing only commands following a certain syntax. They must be
sent from the address by which you are subscribed. A few commands require a
password. Old subscribers were supplied a password by the server when they
subscribed. New subscribers will receive their password in a separate
e-mail. Common server commands include (commands are in upper case below -
following text in parentheses is explanatory only, and not part of the
command):

HELP (will send a general LISTPROC help file)

UNSUBSCRIBE DFC-L (will remove you from the list of subscribers)

SUBSCRIBE DFC-L FIRSTNAME LASTNAME (will subscribe you to DFC-L -
replace "FIRSTNAME LASTNAME" with your own first and last names)

SET DFC-L MAIL DIGEST (To get only 1 message/week from DFC-L that
contains all messages posted in the preceding week)

SET DFC-L MAIL POSTPONE (Self explanatory. Later send "SET DFC-L MAIL" to
start receiving mail from dfc-l again).

SET DFC-L [email protected] PASSWORD [email protected] (to change
the e-mail address by which you are subscribed)

SET DFC-L PASSWORD OLD-PASSWORD NEW-PASSWORD (to change your password for
the list).

SET DFC-L CONCEAL YES|NO (YES to have your name/address not given out to
anyone using the REVIEW DFC-L command. Use NO to have it given out (default)).

INDEX DFC-L (Will return an index to the archive)

SEARCH DFC-L -ALL PATTERN (Will search the primary and subarchives for
lines that match "PATTERN". "PATTERN" may be a single word or string, or
may contain boolean connectors)

GET DFC FILE (will result in the file named FILE being sent to you by
e-mail. FILE names may be obtained by first using the INDEX or SEARCH
commands).

Enjoy!

********** HOW TO POST TO THE LIST **********

Welcome to list DFC-L ([email protected]).

The system has recorded your address as

                        [email protected]

and it is required that you send your postings from this address.

********** HOW TO GET OFF THE LIST **********

To sign off from the list, email to
                        [email protected]

with the following request:

                        signoff DFC-L
or
                        unsubscribe DFC-L

********** GETTING YOUR SUBSCRIPTION ATTRIBUTES **********

You may get your current subscription attributes at any time by sending the
following request to [email protected]:

                        query DFC-L

********** WHERE TO SEND EMAIL **********

If you want to post messages to list DFC-L, you should direct your
email to
                [email protected],

not [email protected].

If you wish to send requests please do not send them to the list -- they
will not be processed. Instead direct them to
                [email protected]

Requests sent to the server should be placed in the body of the
email message, not the Subject:. ListProc ignores requests in the Subject:
field.

You can, however, put as many requests as you like in one mail message; each
request should be on a line by itself. If your request is too long for your
mailer to handle, you can break it in multiple lines, but each line should
end with the character & (ampersand). For example, here are two separate
requests:

set DFC-L &
mail &
ack
help

The ampersands in the above example are immediately followed by carriage
returns. The above requests are equivalent to:

                        set DFC-L mail ack
                        help

                ********** DIGESTS **********

All messages posted to this list are also available in weekly digests.
If you wish to receive messages in digest format you may send the following
request to [email protected]:

                        set DFC-L mail digest

                ********** LIST OWNERS **********

The list's owners are [email protected] [email protected]
[email protected] .
You should contact them if there are any problems.

                ********** YOUR LISTPROC PASSWORD **********

The system has assigned you an initial password: 1122396659
You may change it by sending the following request to
[email protected]:

                set DFC-L password 1122396659 new-password

where new-password is the new string of characters that you would like
to use as your ListProc password.

WARNING: You should NOT use your login password as this is not a secure
mechanism.

This password is to be used when connecting to this server over the Internet
for interactive processing of requests (send a 'help live' request for more
information)

                ********** GETTING STATISTICS **********

To get list statistics you may send the following request to
[email protected]:

                        stats DFC-L

                ********** REVIEWING THE LIST **********

To review the list's settings you may send the following request to
[email protected]:

                        review DFC-L

                ********** ACCESS TO THE LIST'S ARCHIVES **********

The list is archived regularly and many, if not all, previous postings are
available from this server. All past mail messages are collected into
(daily, monthly, etc) logs; to get a list of the available logs for this list
you may send the following request to [email protected]:

                        index DFC-L

Each line will show you the log file's name, its size, and a brief comment.
You can then get any logs with the GET request. For example, if you wish to
get log9611 you may send the following request to [email protected]:

                        get DFC-L log9611

Here we assume log9611 is the name of the log. Log names may not necessarily
be uniform.

********** HOW TO GET MORE HELP **********

To get more information on how to use this service, please send the
following request to [email protected]:

                        HELP

There are far more options, settings, and niceties about ListProcessor(tm)
and we encourage you to explore all of them; HELP should be your starting
point.

Enjoy!
