IT automation that starts in the middle
IT automation has been a very top-down process. It started with the biggest
companies, businesses with thousands of user seats. It tackled the biggest
systems, managing servers and large networks. And it came from the biggest
vendors -- HP, IBM, LANDesk, BMC.

Tried Mandriva One and it sure works great!
Had an old Compaq laptop lying around and decided to try Linux on it. With the
three day Labor Day weekend upon me, I wanted to see if the Mandriva One Linux
distribution was really as easy to install and configure as claimed. Well,
after downloading the ISO image, then burning it to a CD, I was able to install
it on my laptop in around 15 minutes. For the record, it detected all my
hardware and required very little intervention. It surfs the Net beautifully
and has all the programs one would ever need for basic computing - and best of
all it was free.

Linux on the desktop - Much relies on Novell. Can they make it happen?
I have been in IT for over 12 years now. I started with DOS 3.x, moved up to
DOS 5.x, then DOS 6. Then I moved to Windows 3.1 and 3.11 WFW, then to 95, 98,
Windows 2000, skipped ME, and went to XP. Now Vista is coming up. On the server
side, I have worked with NT 3.51, 4.0, 2000 and 2003 Server. Now Longhorn is
coming around. I mention all of these OS's because with each version, things
have gotten a little easier and a little better. Installing drivers has pretty
much been a cinch since Windows 2000. Crashes and memory leaks still happen and
cause us all headaches, but that is definitely better than 5 years ago.
Security, though still needing improvement, is better now than ever before.
