I've been running against MariaDB since AS version 1.4.2 without issue. We're currently on AS 2.2.2 and MariaDB 5.5.56. Incidentally, we recently finished a problem free MySQL to MariaDB cluster migration for all of our applications.

For the purposes of Archivesspace you will see no difference. One can reasonably speculate that at some distant future date MySQL will diverge from MariaDB and cause minor differences with MariaDB[0] (Oracle's gonna Oracle! :-( ) but the optimist in me hopes open source projects will bet on MariaDB over MySQL when that day comes.
