Just to be clear, the intent of the original post was to drop a publicly available, resolvable URI in the appropriate ArchivesSpace digital object field. Do I have that right?
If that's the case, there's no reason any sufficiently permissive and addressable web resource couldn't be used; you could make a corpus of files available and then attach their web addresses to digital objects using API calls. Whether this is best practice from a repository management standpoint is another matter. But as a cheap, relatively frictionless way to make images available to your admin pages, PUI, and/or ArchivesSpace consumer, it's very straightforward.
