Hi Dan, I think I must have misplaced my brain yesterday and it took your email for me to rethink how I was looking at the merge feature.
Yes, you're so right-all I have to do is add the new Top Container to one instance in each of the subsequent records after it's initially created and then can do a merge feature within the Top Containers of that collection now instead of individually. The top containers being linked to multiple resources through me for a loop at first, but it's of course that simple.
