That message means the agent you are trying to delete is also a user of the staff interface. The database is set up to prevent deletion of rows in the "agent_person" table if doing so would leave a dangling reference in the "user" table. To delete the user, and with it their associated agent record, go to System > Manage Users, find the user in the list (which might be tricky if their username is different to their real name), edit, and click Delete.

Hello,
Can someone help us interpret this error message we're getting when trying to delete an agent?
Record deletion failed:
Java::JavaSql::SQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException: Cannot delete or
update a parent row: a foreign key constraint fails (`archivesspace`.`user`,
CONSTRAINT `user_ibfk_1` FOREIGN KEY (`agent_record_id`) REFERENCES
`agent_person` (`id`))

Many thanks,

Wendy
