instead of getting poor and old while waiting for Ministry of Communication or
Institute of Standards to approve the coolest outdoor gear we can imagine, why
not use recycled boxes and just cable-tie them on existing poles:

https://mediagoblin.telavivmakers.org/u/daniel/gallery/

this is a very cheap router in a reclaimed styrofoam box. gal found it in the
local clinics garbage, it was probably used to store meds before, so it was
very clean and didn't even smell bad :)
to supply power to the installation on the roof,
very-poor-mans-power-over-ethernet is used. this means, we populated only the
4 pins needed for 100MBit/s ethernet into the modular western-8 plug and so we
were left with 4 additional wires. those two pairs are now used to supply 9V
DC to the router using it's original power-supply and a similar hack in
ground-station...

this means the total-cost-of-ownership of an ARIG node is down to ILS 95 for
this TL-WR740N router plus some meters of ethernet cable, some cable ties,
access to a ethernet-crimping tool plus plugs and a bit of good will.

yet, given direct-line-of-sight (in radio terms, mind the Fresnel Zone [1])
this is sufficient for quite fast links on several kilometers! impressive, if
you ask me :)

have fun!

daniel
