... they did! wow!  so i updated the post, and did another test part,
that was at 175mm/sec on a layer height of 0.15 (nozzle is still
0.4mm) and that came out far better than i expected, too.

 i'm really excited by how the quality's turning out for such a low
investment.  i still haven't added a nozzle fan yet!  i did however
stiffen up the frame somewhat with more wood-working 50mm steel corner
triangles.  the bracing's not perfect but seems to be having an
appreciable improvement.
