GNU Taler is a fundamentally different system than Bitcoin. Unless I misunderstand the information on their website.
GNU Taler appears to be a third party; analogous to a credit card company or a bank. GNU Taler could manage and secure your cash (or bitcoin) for you and be trusted to ensure that transactions are carried out smoothly. In contrast, Bitcoin is analogous to hard currency (Euro coins, US dollar bills, gold, etc), and is something that can be managed for you by a trusted third party.
