As you probably have a spare Rpi3 now, you can use that as well - just connect 
Rx->Tx and Tx->Rx (and GND<->GND), and you should be good to go.

Though, long term a USB-serial converter probably is the better solution. 
Almost any should do, I am not aware of any chipset which is not supported by 
Linux. Choose any $5 USB-serial converter which uses TTL levels, and if it has 
a jumper for 5V/3V3 selection, choose 3V3.
