Just to check for faulty hardware, I downloaded the "official" Ubuntu
image from friendlyarm.com.
Full log below.
With this image the NIC works, so the hardware seems to be fine.
What puzzles me a bit is the boot loader output in this case; it is
rather different from the GIT or OpenBSD version of uboot.
I will try to investigate how they build their uboot...
