But why is the problem not that folks do not understand that there would be some mutual gain if one accepted cash in order to switch places with a person who urgently wants to advance in the line, but rather that it is just not culturally acceptable? (Hence, "crazy," but not necesarily grifting.) Why assume it is due to ignorance? This seems to me to be a hypothesis easily tested. In fact, I will test it and report back! (I will print up an official-looking data sheet, and if a subject looks at me oddly, I will explain that this is an economics experiment.)
