They in effect do this by calling an opponent "extreme" or "not in the
mainstream" or "ideologue".

Democrats sometimes accuse Republicans of catering to the rich ("tax cuts
for the rich"), implying that the Democrats cater more to the median middle
class.

Republicans sometimes counter that the Democrats cater to fringy extreme
liberal groups.
