Rachel:
You're right -- we seem to be kindred souls -- suppose that's one
of the reasons we like books enough to read them and discuss them with
other readers. Nice to "meet" you!
So what kind of books are your favorites? What are the best ones
you've read recently?
I'm well into Stephenson's "Diamond Age", and a friend sent me a
copy of "Love in the Time of Cholera" so I have this "guilt" thing
about reading it so I can tell him my opinion. It's not my usual kind
of material.
I think the best books I've read recently were Bill Bryson's "A
Short History of Nearly Everything", and Christopher Moore's "Lamb:
The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal."
The "Lemony Snicket" books have just turned into movies, and this
is one situation where I might want to see the movie. The writing of
the books is so artificial (in the literal sense) that I find it hard
to relax enough to let it alter my reality and take me along on the
ride. Yet, they seem to be wildly popular and well-received. I
wonder if a movie would make them more accessible?
William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" was so packed with
parenthetical inserts, interrupting itself, trying to make every
possible droll comment... Maybe the writing relaxed after a while and
it read more like a book and less like listening to a kid with ADHD
read aloud, but I just never could get far into that book either. And
yet, I LOVED the movie and the whole family quotes from it endlessly.
On the other hand "Meteor Man" was a GREAT book turned into a
wretched movie. Oh, well.
My hubby and I went to see "The Incredibles" this past weekend
and laughed our selves silly -- and yesterday I found the novelization
of the movie on a truckload of books to be cataloged! Nice to see it
happens in both directions.
