Best Background Score
A.R.Rahman, Swades
The background score for Swades could not be the usual kind that merely
underlines scenes
because if it went by the standard forumla, the integrity of the film would
have been lost. For
this film, the background score had to be part of the story telling. At certain
times it needed
to be loud, at certain times it had to speed up the story.
I had a vision for the film, Ashutosh Gowariker too had a vision, and we both
sat down and
combined our visions for the score. We experimented a bit so it went back and
forth - you try
something, you mix it, then you come back, mix it agains.
Take the scene in the train in which Shah Rukh Khan sees the young boy selling
water. It is, I
think, the most important scene in the movie and it's also the one that most
people say made
them cry. We discussed many options here , among which the main two were to
have Yeh Jo Des or
Yeh Tara in the background. We finally chose Yeh Tara.
My favourite scene in the movie , though is the one where the projector comes
to a halt and
Shah Rukh explains all about the stars and constellations in the sky.
As for the songs, the first positive reactions were to Yeh tara, then was Yeh
jo des hai mera
and then three months later, it was Sanwaria Sanwaria! One song, Ahista Ahista
was dropped but
I have absolutely no problems with that. In fact, when I saw the film, i felt
it had to be
shortened. I told Ashutosh, do whatever it takes, but shorten the film. He
called me a few days
later and said, there are some scenes that have to go and with them the song
will go too. I
told him to go ahead and do whatever was good for the film. You can't think in
terms of a song
or a scene, you have to think of the integrity of the film.
This is my 17th Filmfare Award and I'm thankful for the support I've received
from Filmfare,
the jury and my fans. And to the Divine Creator, from where all my music comes.
