According to some media reports that I'd read around 1994 - 1995, Mahesh Bhatt (Director of remade Hindi film 'The Gentleman') had earlier approached AR Rahman to remake the music for the said Hindi film. AR, having many projects on hand down south, denied the offer. Later the director and producers 'Geetha Arts' made up their minds to team up with Anu Malik. It was Anu Malik who suggested that some Tamil songs should be used in Hindi too. Since AR was getting famous in Mumbai too, the director decided to take the proper permissions from AR Rahman, Shankar, and the Audio companies.

Accordingly, they took the permissions from director and composer. HMV took the audio copyrights from Pyramid, and the songs were made in Hindi. Its all done legally.

In 1996 or so, I saw the Hindi movie on VHS, and was surprised to see this in the credits: 'My sincere and special thanks to Mr. AR Rahman for letting us reuse 4 Tamil songs.' - Anu Malik. This was something different, because Anu Malik never accepted that he copies someone's tunes. He would always keep saying that he's 'inspired' from other composers' work.

Anyway, its still enigma which is original tune for 'Jhoom Ke Dil Ne Pukara' sung by SPB and Chithra in the Hindi version. It doesn't sound like a Anu Malik work.. No, please, never!!

But in all, as you said, he really needs brain and some peace!
