We should not be disappointed with ARR choosing to do a particular style of movies. I believe his best work comes out when he composes for a purpose he respects and enjoys working for. Whether he does period movies, commercial film, broadway musical, or personal album, all that matters to me is the talent that goes into each work.
In the past he period movies has brought out some fantastic tunes. I'd be wary of jurging his compositions too early; it often takes a while to understand.
