C,mon Aanand. What is the benchmark or yardstick to measure good music. This is not mathematics or science where the output is defenite. As for a AM or NS, one can definitely say that our boss's music is way ahead but comparing within ARR's work and saying maybe Lagaan was better, please give him a break, man. It is like comparing Sachin Tendulkar with Sachin. The movies, director, situations, time everything is different. I can accept when you say that may be Rising is not Rahman's best work. That is your opinion and you are entitled to it. But please do not say words like "poor quality music" or "relatively poor performance" in relation to The Rising because I do not really think it is. If he is making music for movies especially period ones he has got to give situational music. He will definitely not have the flexibility of giving any music he wants. Otherwise it will stink like AM's music for Asoka where the music did not relate to the period at all. please do comment.

Subject: [arr] Rising and criticism

I'm disappointed and sad that in general this yahoogroup seems to be
unable to take any criticism of Rahman in its stride.

Good fans will not accept poor quality music and still convince
themselves that it is good. Good fans will also not berate people who
make fair criticism of Rahman's music.

Its obvious that the reviews for The Rising have been mixed on
indiafm, rediff and all the other major websites. Despite that, the
moment someone sends a critique here, people jump on him and berate him.

I'm a big fan of Rahman's music and know almost all his songs by
heart. I don't even listen to any other Hindi/Tamil music composer.
However, even I can sense a relatively poor performance when I hear
one. Even Rahman will probably admit that The Rising wasn't his best
work. Ofcourse, it might well be that the movie demanded Rahman to
make such "situational" music. But on a purely musical basis, its
obvious to me that the Rising doesn't quite cut it.

My advice to some of the members here : Please remain fans, don't
become fanatics.

- Aanand.
