Rawat,

I post here to express my heartfelt feelings about Rahman and
opinions about certain topics. I also hope to stimulate a general
discussion. I don't expect and don't appreciate my posts to be
dissected and analyzed like you have done so, and that too with a
condescending tone. So, let me return the favor.

appropriate for the type of movie and situations" or not?

Have you seen Mangal Pandey?

Do you have some inside information about the movie?

If not, then you are talking about faith."

My Response:

No I have not seen Mangal Pandey and none of us have. You know the
answer to that question, so why ask? But I do know enough about
Hindustani classical music from the older times to know that the
songs are indeed appropriate for the situations to be shown in the
movie, like the Mujhra, devotional number, Holi celebration, etc.

"are you approving of "andho.n me.n kaanaa raajaa" theory?

Are you saying that Rahman is least bad among all MD?"

My Response:

I have never heard of that theory. Why do you have to present it
without an explanation? I am saying that no other MD that I can
think of could have done a better job with the type of songs
composed. That is my opinion. Simple. No need for analysis.

"I think it is Rahman's doing if people do not consider above
factors.

A period movie should have music which creates the
environment of that period. That means that the songs should
use only those instrumnents which were available in that
era, and should have lyrics having words/ language used in
that era.

ARR's earlier period movies all had non-period music. He
always used latest instruments and never was particular
about lyrics. Kisna was 1947-ish, but hum hain is pal yahaan
had nothing 1947-ish feel. it could have been as well a song
set in 2006.

Even in Rising, the tunes are totally different from most of
earlier works, thus some semblance of "period" has come to
it. But did he use only 1857's instruments in it, did he got
the lyrics written with 1857's language?

If no, then why accuse criticis/ fans when they discount the
"period-ness" of ARR's music."

My response:

What do you mean by "Rahman's doing"? Rahman has no control over
people's misplaced expectations. The fact that many people expect
another "Taal" or "Dil Se" is not Rahman's doing. Please explain
that. AND, my point was not about to what extent Rahman's
compositions are period valid. The point was that many people still
expect mainstream stuff from Rahman even in a period film, hence the
disappointments. And I don't think that a music score has to be
period valid by only using that time's instruments only, whatever
that means. Yes, Rahman has used authentic percussion, accordian,
sarangi, and other classical instruments from that period, alongside
synth sounds, which I feel don't take away anything from the
authenticity of the period score. That's my opinion. No need to
analyze it. And it's not just about instruments as you say. It's
about the quality of the compositions, the style, the singing, and
the fact that Rising is heavily raaga based to me gives it a lot of
authenticity.

My Response:
I just expressed my feelings. No need to analyze it in Hindi. Why
couldn't you have stated that in English? Did you want to sound
impressive?

Rawat wrote:
"Whatever reasons anyone can give, will be valid only for the
poster."

My response:

Opinions can be shared and can be backed by facts too.
