kaissiom <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:From the initial reactions to Holi Re within the group, I thought it
was just an average song. People disappointed about re-used beats,
other reviews called it an average song, passable etc, but little
did I know I was in for a big treat.
Holi Re
Singers: Amir Khan, Udit Narayan, Madhushree, Chinmayi, Srinivas
The song kicks off witha typical "Holee haaii" emotion. The Daud
beat kicks in short after, it reminds you of Daud only for a second
or two, as Amir soon starts crooning, the beat just blends in with
his singing the Daud memory is no longer there. This shows the beat
was apt for the part Amir sings. He has done a pretty good job, for
the singing is pretty fast and lyriscs are not very easy. Has
anyone noticed the Shehnai that starts shortly after Amir starts
singing at 00:10 and accompanies him throughout his singing until
00:28. At 00:30, the "Chand aya hai" beat kicks in, and Udit takes
over. The beat along with Udit's singing only refreshes the memory
of "Chand aya hai", but not for long, as Madhushree starts
singing "Oh hoo..." with Shehnai giving her company in the
background. The beat changes for the third time at 00:53. The song
gets into proper holi mood, with Udit taking the lead, with the
Shehnai playing parts in the background. Shehnai is evidently
present throughout most of the song. Is Shehnai a prominent
instrument during the holi festival or is it just Rahman? Anyway,
continuing with the song, the beat remains the same, while Udit and
Madhushree flawlessly croon through the mukhda. I just love the
part where Madhushree ends the line..."..rangreli mein rang
kehlungi, rang jaoungi.".. there is a pause, right as you think she
is done with the line, she picks up with "Rang ghehre hain, ab ke
saal". Now that is just superb. Very Rahmanisque, very unexpected
in a hindi song. "Ab hamein koi roke nahin... ab honedo ho jo bhi
haal" reminds of "Ghanan ghanan", some string instrument playing in
the left channel, while there is some plastic toy sound in the right
channel. The beat picks up pace with "Dekho aayi holi.. rang layi
holi" part and Chinmayi starts singing at about 1:50, she sounds
nice and fresh. She does a good job singing the anthra... do pay
attention to the "pause" in the anthra right after she sings..."tum
reh reh ke"..pause.."mat phehko yeh.." This time the pause has a
very exciting "Hooa!" by Udit, at about 2:12. I don't know how many
times I have rewinded this part. Rahman stamp right over it,
something different everytime, never consistent or constant, even
within a song. Anyway, Srinivas can barely be heard in the
background in the following line..."Ab hamine koi..." he then sings
the line "Dekho aayi holi..." when the beat changes back to "Chand
aya hai" at 2:29, and then Amir sings his part along with Chinmayi,
this part kind of reminds you of "Radha kaise na jale". This part
is also interesting, looks like the Shehnai and Madhushree are
taking turns (2:45-3:09) in the back, as Amir sings. The Shehnai
sounds really good at about 2:53 and then maybe some expert can shed
light on what it is the Shehnai is doing from 3:11 to 3:21. Is it
some kind of "slutter/shutter" effect or can a Shehnai be played
like that? From 3:22 on, the song really picks up pace, almost
sounds like a bhangra song with the "Hoy"s and "Hey"s. Udit and
Madhushree finish up the second anthra beautifully, are you looking
for the Rahman stamp, well you have it, the second anthra does not
have the "pause" like the mukhda and the first anthra. Nobody can
match the level of details Rahman adds to a song. Srinivas takes
the mic after the second anthra at 3:40 and can be heard until the
end of the song. The song further picks up pace towards the end,
sounds really fun, makes you want to be a part of and in the middle
of where ever this holi is taking place. This proves Rahman has
done his job taking you to holi in your imagination. The Shehnai
towards the end, at points reminds me of Humma's ending. Love the
part towards the end, when they say something like.. "Jagrida
sararara, jagiraa sararara" at 4:36-4:39. And right after notice
the song ending with Madhushree's "Heeeeeyyyyyeeee...", in tune with
the Shehnai, from 4:22 on. It goes high to low...almost fading.
One can get the feeling Madhushree was still going to sing, when she
just had to end the song, and she is comes to a end, craving for
more.

When I started this review, my rating for this song was 10/10.
After the review it is 10+/10. I dare not review any other songs
from Rising, as they are beyond me. I'm not a musician and have no
musical education or background, neither do I have knowledge about
any instruments. So, you can not call this an amateur's review, you
can call it a layman's review. So, don't hate me if you found this
review really boring. The only music I know is Rahman sir's music
and I wish someone could let him know that all his hard work and
attention to detail has never gone unnoticed by his fans.
**** Swaps forgive me for trying to enter your territory, for I
couldn't help but express my feeling towards this one song. Many
reviews from you have been long over due, at least do a review on
Rising and Aa Aaah.
